At the age of twenty two, Arlene de Silva started taking pictures as a hobby. She later became interested in obtaining training about how to take better photographs and studied photography under a local professional photographer Robin Goetz.
Arlene de Silva is the creator and photographer of Faces in Aging, an exhibit focusing on the aging experience that transcends ethnic, religious and national borders. It features sensitive, moving and delightful depictions of older adults from diverse cultures of Sri Lanka, the United Kingdom and the United States. Emotionally compelling, this traveling exhibit is highly acclaimed, and has been exhibited in Baltimore, Maryland; Cincinnati and Columbus, Ohio; Covington, Kentucky; Denver, Colorado and Washington DC. The exhibit is the catalyst for a coffee table book titled “Faces in Aging” authored by Ms de Silva, which is currently seeking publication.
Her photo Catherine at 106 and 1, portraying a one hundred and six year old holding a framed photo of her at age one, won the bronze award from the Mature Media Awards. Ms de Silva’s photographs have also appeared in various publications nationally.
Ms de Silva’s first exhibit of black and white photos titled “Here’s Looking at You Kid” of women from diverse ethnic backgrounds has also been exhibited in the Greater Cincinnati area.
She is currently studying light and digital photography under George Jones, a professional photographer in Cincinnati. Through his mentoring she is learning the difference between taking a good photograph and making a good photograph. Her focus is on people & travel photography.
